Drainage

Clay

Drainage system in operationThere are many areas in the Montreal region that have poor drainage. These areas can exist naturally or can be created during landscaping. Once the ground becomes saturated and the terrain is such that the water cannot naturally flow away, the area will begin to flood.

why

There are only two ways for water to be drained. Vertically or horizontally. Vertical drainage can only occur if the water is able to drain faster than it is accumulating at the surface. This is a function of the soils characteristics and is not easily modified. Horizontal drainage, for the most part, only occurs once the soil is saturated and begins to flow on the surface towards the lowest point. Since this type of drainage requires a saturated soil, it is not ideal because puddles will occur. This can be modified!

how

French drainage pipeWith the installation of underground drainage we can give the soil a saturation level that is now underground. This means that the surface does not have to be saturated and puddle for drainage to occur. This is accomplished by installing pipe (normally 12" deep) and directing the water off the property.
